CP/5Splus, A Monitored Cleaner Workplace

The implementation of a full-blown cleaner production project is initially daunting. Smaller steps could yield substantial results that could eventually lead to a good cleaner production practice. A cleaner workplace can be sustained if it is properly monitored. In fact, it could be the basis for operational analysis.

The CP/5Splus program is derived from the popular Japanese housekeeping technique “5S”. Originally, the five S stands for five Japanese words namely: Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu and Shitsuke. These five S are adopted into the English language, maintaining their meaning as: Sort, Set In Order, Shine, Standardize and Sustain respectively. These 5S have been very effective in starting up an organization into developing their cleaner production activities. In order to strengthen the implementation of 5S activities, it is proposed that these be monitored. The “plus” refers to the effort of recording these activities. The CP part is the use of the data gathered to support cleaner production activities. Hence, this paper proposes CP/5Splus, a program that combines CP decision-making, 5S activities and monitoring efforts.

Because of the differences of available resources, the CP/5Splus stipulates the need for monitored 5S activities using three different approaches, namely computer database, computer spreadsheet or manual notebook. Hence, the CP/5Splus comes in three flavors, namely: CP/5Sdb, CP/5Sopen, CP/5Smanual.

CP/5Sdb utilizes end-user computing philosophy approaches to implement the recording function. By collecting information electronically, the firm could easily look back and analyze its progress towards cleaner production. On the other hand, the CP/5Sopen is based on the use of spreadsheets to record consumption materials and wastages. Hence, just like the CP/5Sdb, the CP/5Sopen is geared towards empowering the end-user through the computers. Finally, the CP/5Smanual is based on the use of pencil and paper to note down materials. The CP/5Smanual offers templates and guides to support the firms monitoring activities.

Some of the information that could be of interest are the following: List of Items, Usage of each Items, WorkSheet, List of Locations, Directory for Easy Search, Persons who can borrow, Checklist for Cleanliness, Cleaning Schedule, Cleaning Supplies Inventory Record, Cleaning Equipment Listing, Cleaning Personnel, etc.

The CP/5Splus programs are deployed to clients through two different means, namely: CP/5Splus-Onsite and CP/5Splus-Seminar. The CP/5Splus-Seminar is conducted in two days. Depending on the attendees, the seminar could be extended to three days for the attendees to absorb both concepts of 5S and computers. On the other hand, the CP/5plus- Onsite is conducted at the client site with the active participation of the consultant. With the CP/5plus-Onsite, the consultant visits the client every week and stays at the site for around 3 hours. Normally, the CP/5plus-Onsite could last approximately 3 months.
