8 Network Analysis Tools to Build Smarter and More Efficient Cities
In this post, I’ll introduce 8 Network Analysis tools in both ArcGIS and QGIS, along with their functionality and real-world examples to better illustrate their purpose.
๐The article “10 Spatial Analyses Every Urban Planner Should Know” has received an unprecedented response from the Urban Planning and GIS community, reaching over 110,000 views to date. I am so grateful for the tons of support and any engagement coming my way from all of you.
โก๏ธ I suggest you to check it out first if you haven’t already:

๐กIn my previous post, I categorized various spatial analyses into logical and structured groups. I carefully read through all your feedback and realized there is significant interest and potential to dive deeper into spatial analysis tools. Many of you requested more in-depth explanations of each type of analysis (such as network analysis and land-use analysis), along with the introduction of relevant tools for each.
๐ฌIn response to your feedback, Iโve decided to create a series of posts focused on spatial analysis tools, where each post will introduce tools related to one specific type of analysis.
โ๏ธMy goal in these posts is simple:
1๏ธโฃ Introduce the tool
2๏ธโฃ Provide a brief summary of its functionality
3๏ธโฃ Share a real-world example to help you better understand how it works.
๐ฏThis post specifically focuses on introducing tools for ArcGIS and QGIS. As we know, network analysis tools in ArcGIS are found in the Network Analyst extension, and while QGIS doesn’t have as comprehensive tools as ArcGIS, the default network analysis tools can still meet most needs. Iโm not an expert in QGIS, as I primarily work in ArcGIS, but Iโve made a dedicated a page in the present carousel to introduce helpful QGIS network analysis plugins, which expand the softwareโs capabilities. Iโd be very grateful if QGIS experts could share any feedback, corrections, or suggestions, so I can incorporate them into future posts. Additionally, I can update the captions to include any improvements.
Ultimately, the goal of this post is to help the urban planning and GIS community become more familiar with different network analysis tools and start incorporating them into their work. By doing so, we hope to plan cities and towns with optimized routes, better distribution of amenities, and overall greater efficiency.
Looking forward to your thoughts and feedback! Letโs keep improving our cities together. ๐โจ
