ARCHITECTURE FOR THE UN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS A MAP OF GLOBAL EFFORTS

The UIA2023CPH World Congress of Architects, titled ‘SUSTAINABLE FUTURES – LEAVE NO ONE BEHIND,’ promotes, discusses, develops, and showcases architecture as a crucial tool for achieving the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Society finds itself in a situation of crisis. The real challenges we stand before as we enter an era of climate breakdown and biodiversity loss, coupled with exponential population growth, accelerated urbanization, and escalated social division and inequality, are putting unprecedented pressures on the way we live and how we see our future. Around the world, campaigners, cities, institutions, and governments are declaring a state of emergency. In this unprecedented moment, the defining question for architects, urban designers, and landscape architects is: what are the radical measures by which we affect a step change in the way we think, design, and build our societies?

The overarching goal of the UIA2023CPH Congress – Science Track is to foster the knowledge needed for architecture and the built environment to understand, shape, and fulfill its active role in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The congress articulates the special agency architecture and the built environment have in shaping our societies: the way we live, the way we interact, the way we build, and how changing our practices can lead to a sustainable, equitable, and inclusive future for all.
