Clean Water and Sanitation

Water and sanitation are the foundation of resilient communities. Yet, 2.2 billion people lack access to clean water, and 3.5 billion lack safely managed sanitation. As climate change accelerates, it is threatening vital water sources—including glaciers, which store nearly 70% of the world’s freshwater.
Cities are feeling the pressure. Over 1 billion people living in slums and informal settlements struggle to access safe water. Meanwhile, 530 cities worldwide are already experiencing climate-driven water stress, putting 517 million urban residents at risk of disease, economic loss, and infrastructure collapse. Without urgent action, these challenges will only intensify.
This Tagar#WorldWaterDay, we highlight the urgent need to protect glaciers—one of Earth’s most vital freshwater sources. As glaciers melt due to rising temperatures, water cycles are becoming more unpredictable, leading to severe droughts, water shortages, floods, and landslides. These changes jeopardize sustainable urban development and threaten millions of lives.
UN-Habitat is committed to safeguarding water resources through initiatives like:
🚰 The Global Water Operators’ Partnership Alliance
🚰 The Water as Leverage Multilevel Climate Action Programme
🚰 Contributions to the 2025 World Water Development Report in collaboration with UN-Water
Water connects us all. By acting today to protect glaciers and manage water sustainably, we can create a more resilient and water-secure world for future generations.
