Climate Change, Health, and Equity

Local public health departments (LHDs) across the United States are actively working to address health inequities, a task that necessitates intentional changes in public health practice. While providing vital services to individuals in communities remains essential, LHDs are expanding their focus to support systems change across various sectors that shape community environments, such as transportation, land use, agriculture, food, and criminal justice systems. They are also addressing the economic, physical, and social conditions in which people live, work, learn, and play. Furthermore, LHDs are beginning to tackle the historical and structural determinants of health, including racism, power, and disenfranchisement, which have created and perpetuated persistent inequities.

It is now imperative for public health to extend this broadened approach to climate change. The actions we take today will determine the severity and timing of future impacts, as well as the ability of our communities to thrive amidst the challenges posed by climate change.
