International Geodiversity Day

International Geodiversity Day on 6 October, as proclaimed by UNESCO’s General Conference, highlights the often-overlooked significance of geodiversity—the variety of geological features such as rocks, minerals, fossils, and landforms. Despite its critical role in providing resources and ecosystem services, geodiversity remains underappreciated in society.

Geodiversity supports countless aspects of human life, from providing the raw materials needed for construction and energy to influencing the landscape and ecosystems that sustain biodiversity. However, public awareness of these contributions is limited. Promoting a deeper understanding of Earth’s dynamic processes is crucial for enabling informed decision-making and policy development aimed at sustainability.

Through International Geodiversity Day, UNESCO aims to draw attention to how geoscience can help address global challenges such as climate change, natural disasters, and resource management. The day serves as a call to action for increased awareness, education, and policy advocacy to ensure the sustainable management of geodiversity for future generations.
