Nighttime Light (NTL) Analysis is a powerful tool used to study urbanization, economic activity, and
infrastructure development by analyzing artificial light emissions captured from satellite imagery. This method leverages data from sources such as the VIIRS/NPP (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite / National Polar-orbiting Partnership) Lunar BRDF-Adjusted Nighttime Lights, which provides a detailed and
consistent record of artificial lighting across different geographic regions.

For cities like Banjarmasin, where rapid urbanization and spatial transformation occur, NTL analysis
provides crucial insights into how the city expands and evolves. By combining Nighttime Light Data with
methods such as the Clockboard Zoning System (CBZ) and Zonal Statistics, planners can better understand development patterns and ensure balanced, efficient, and sustainable growth.

Observations in the Banjarmasin City area were meticulously conducted by leveraging VIIRS/NPP Lunar BRDF-Adjusted Nighttime Lights (NTL) data, which provides an annual snapshot of the city’s
nighttime illumination patterns. This data serves as a crucial indicator of urban activity, economic development, and spatial transformations over time.

To gain deeper insights into the city’s morphology, the study employed the Clockboard Zoning System (CBZ)—a unique analytical framework designed to capture urban dynamics with precision. The
CBZ framework divides the city into 12 distinct segments, strategically positioned to serve as directional indicators of urban expansion and transformation. Each of these segments is further subdivided into
seven radial spokes, facilitating a granular understanding of Banjarmasin’s evolving cityscape.

Beyond qualitative spatial assessment, a robust quantitative analysis was carried out using the Zonal Statistics function. This analytical tool enables the extraction of critical data from NTL measurements,
providing valuable insights into spatial distribution patterns and intensity variations in urban development. Through this multi-faceted approach, the study effectively maps out the contours of
Banjarmasin’s urban transformation, offering a comprehensive perspective on its growth and development.
