Smart, Sustainable and Resilient cities
This report was produced by UNEP in close collaboration with the Italian Presidency of the G20. The
report was written by Oli Brown – under the guidance of Martina Otto (UNEP); chapter 4 was co-authored
with Ludwig Liagre and Alexander Koch (Natural Strategies) and Diana Lopez Caramazana (UNDP). It
draws from valuable discussions during virtual events that were held on 16th and 23rd April 2021, as well
as the debates during the environment and climate working group, and the support of experts at Local
Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI), C40 Cities, United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and
Natural Strategies. The sections on multi-level governance were informed by a survey developed and ran
together with UNDP, with the support of U20 and ICLEI. Detailed survey results will be made available online only, through a separate Annex.
