#wateraecurity is defined, by the UN, as the capacity of a population to safeguard Tagar#sustainable access to adequate quantities of acceptable quality Tagar#water for sustaining Tagar#livelihoods, human well-being, and socioeconomic development, for ensuring protection against waterborne pollution and water-related disasters, and for preserving Tagar#ecosystems in a climate of peace and political stability.

The SDGs, specifically Tagar#SDG6, reflect these holistic dimensions of water security. The SDG targets and indi­cators are universally agreed means of monitoring and reporting on progress towards achieving water security.

The UN has assessed the progress of 186 countries in terms of water security attainment. The assessment is based on 10 metrics:

2️⃣ Sanitation
3️⃣ Good health
4️⃣ Water quality
5️⃣ Water availability
6️⃣ Water value
7️⃣ Water governance
8️⃣ Human safety
9️⃣ Economic safety
🔟 Water resource stability

From the assessment, the following findings stand out:

💦 The majority of the world’s population now lives in water-insecure countries.

💦 610 million people, equivalent to 8% of the world’s population, are critically water insecure.

💦 5.52 billion people, equivalent to 72% of the world population, face water insecurity.

💦 415 million people in the Americas, including Mexico, face water insecurity.

💦 113 countries face water insecurity, including the world’s two most populous countries, India and China.

In Mexico, the Tagar#risk of Tagar#freshwater variability is high, given the country’s dependence on rainfall for water storage, particularly in agricultural areas. Studies have also highlighted the role of the El Niño Southern Oscillation in exacerbating the impacts of interannual water variability in the region, with El Niño-related droughts often leading to reduced water availability, decreased food security, and economic losses
