What is a bioswale?

A bioswale is a landscaped, vegetated channel designed to manage stormwater runoff by filtering and slowing down the flow of water. It helps remove pollutants like sediment, oil, and heavy metals before the water reaches natural waterways or groundwater systems. Bioswales are commonly used in urban areas to improve water quality and reduce the risk of flooding.
How It Works:
- Infiltration: Rainwater or runoff from roads, parking lots, or rooftops is directed into the bioswale.
- Filtration: The water passes through vegetation, soil, and sometimes gravel layers, which trap contaminants.
- Absorption: Plants and microbes in the soil help absorb nutrients and break down pollutants.
- Slow Release: Cleaned water either infiltrates into the ground or flows out at a controlled rate.
Benefits:
- Reduces Flooding: Slows down water runoff, preventing overwhelming drainage systems.
- Improves Water Quality: Filters pollutants before water reaches rivers or groundwater.
- Supports Biodiversity: Provides habitat for insects, birds, and other wildlife.
- Urban Cooling: Vegetation helps reduce the urban heat island effect.
Bioswales are often found along roadsides, parking lots, parks, and urban green spaces as part of Nature-based Solutions for sustainable urban water management.
